Wyre accordion club As Visited by David Batty (President of Leyland Accordion Club) I used to call this the Blackpool accordion club as this is it's main geographical location in relation to me, I have corrected this though and have changed the word Blackpool to Wyre, sorry blac I mean Wyre Accordion Club.
Wyre Accordion ClubThe Wyre Accordion Club held their club night on Wednesday 15th October 1997, a good selection of accordionists played to about 30 people. There was the usual raffle and a welcoming Hotpot supper. I played four pieces about ten minutes after arriving (you cannot argue when someone stands up and tells you that you ARE next), these seemed to go down quite well but maybe there is a club rule to be nice to anyone no matter how much pain they inflict on your ears! 19th November 1997 had Roberto Enzo from Italy playing for two 45 minute spots, the first half was with an acoustic accordion but the second half was with a midi accordion type instrument, this had no bellows or reeds but otherwise had the same layout as a normal accordion.
18th February 1998 We were back to having accordions again at the club, I enjoyed this evening, about eight players provided entertainment throughout the evening, I played a few pieces including The Long Long Trail, American Patrol and my own arrangement of Duelling Banjo's called not surprisingly 'Duelling Accordion', this involves playing the right hand against the left as per the two banjo players in the film deliverance, it does get a bit fiddly as it gets faster but I was pleased that it was my own arrangement. Someone played a brilliant version of 'flight of the bumblebee', this is next on my list of tunes to practice. Basil Berry played a selection of tunes from the 30's, 40's and 50's including Chattanooga Choo Choo', I won on the raffle and enjoyed sitting back and listening to the entertainment. It is a nice change from running your own club and being the front man to being able to sit back and let someone else worry about programme. I look forward to next month.
