| Leyland Accordion Club - 16th November 2005

Our November ConcertOur November concert night started with Colin Ensor playing a selection of tunes followed by John Higham. After Alan Gelling had taken to the stage, it was time for our guest artist Lisa Lee Leslie. Lisa had travelled up from London earlier in the day and was making her debut at Leyland. I booked Lisa after hearing her play at Eastbourne Accordion Festival at the start of the year. Lisa brough two button accordions with her and, during her act, she constantly changed from one to the other, depending on which tunes she was playing. Her first piece was Adios Nonino by Piazolla followed by Czardas by Fugazza. Lisas next piece, Fantasia by Handel, was followed by the Scarlatti tune Gigue. After playing Minure Polka Lisa swapped accordions again to play Allegro by Pescetti. To finish her first half, she played Cappriccio by Repnikow. After the break we were entertained by Basil Berry and then myself playing a selection of tunes. Our next player was one of our regular guest artists, Harry Hussey who played a selection of tunes as requested by the audience. Then, as if it wasn't enough to have two guest artist type persons at the club, Harry was joined by a previous guest artist, Ken Astin. The duo played Espana, How High The Moon and Meant To Me. After the raffle, it was time for the return of our guest artist Lisa Lee Leslie to return for her second half. Starting with her red accordion, Lisa played Style Musette, Ayre with variations by Eddie Harris and English Morris Tune also by Eddie Harris. After another accordion change, we heard Invention by Bach, the Pizolla piece Preperense and Carovanna Negra (Kramer). It was back to the pink accordion for Princess Accordion and Plaisance Fox. After Style Musette by Verchurren on the black accordion, it was back to her pink button accordion for Radio Waltz, Waltz Militaire, Polka Militaire and finally Nany by Colombo/Leslie. Lisa had given us a great performance and some great entertainment. From the comments I heard as people left the club it was obvious that they want her to return to Leyland again in the future and I will make sure that happens. We finally closed up shop at about 11.45pm after lots of after-show discussions between various people who seemed eager to chat to Lisa. Lisa said that she thought that we are a very friendly club which was a nice observation. Roll on our next club night this Wednesday which is guaranteed to be a good one if all our past December party nights are anything to go by.... David Batty |

This WednesdayThis Wednesday is our Jacobs Join Christmas party night. This is traditionally a very enjoyable party night with plenty of variety in the acts seen on the stage. The first part of the evening is like a normal club night while we lay out the plates and food brought by club members. Once the food is out and ready to be served, the lights go up and we have a very informal evening of eating while listening to whoever chooses to get up on stage next. We often see new duets or acts on stage at our December night, and this is an ideal time for nervous players to take to the stage because the rest of us are busy eating (and listening at the same time even if not watching you play). The doors open at 7.30pm for an 8pm start. See you there on Wednesday. Remember to bring your accordion if you have not played at the club before, there has never been a better time to make your debut.

Christmas Party - This Wednesday

Our WebsiteOur internet website has had 87,203 vistors as at 16th of December 2005, that's 1171 visitors to the main page of our website since last month. This month I added a multi page document to the site for people to download and print out. This document details what we do at the club, what we have done in the past and how we work. I hope it will be printed out and passed around at various clubs in order to inspire people to do new things with their club. I have heard of many clubs that have only a small membership, who discourage audiences and even who discourage women from attending! It is with these types of clubs in mind that I decided to publish the document on the Internet so that people who want to inspire change can hand it to the club members and ask "Shouldn't we be doing some of these types of things?". I will let you know if I get any feedback from the document, lets hope it does some good. |
A to Z Of The Accordion Vol 2The second volume of Rob Howard's Book has now been released. With 200+ new and archive articles plus 250 photographs and pictures. The cost is £15 (+ £4 p/p), from Rob Howard. I managed to get a small number of the books from Rob in an effort to save you postage costs, most of these went at the last practice night. Ask at the club on Wednesday if you want one of the final few, but you will have to be quick as there are only a few left at £15. |
Fleetwood Accordion FestivalThe NAO North West Accordion Festival was held at The Marine Hall, Fleetwood, on Sunday November 27th. It was a good day out for accordionists listening to the various competitors playing their best pieces in the competitions. It was nice to see our own club members Rebecca Parker, Ann Parker and Mary Hall collecting their prizes including Rebecca getting a 1st Prize with a very impressive score of 90 out of 100 marks.
